From its very earliest beginnings in the mid 1980’s, the crux of extremities® design has been to provide functional gear that provides the best protection in the worst conditions. Over the years our range has grown from a few glove and mitt styles to over 30 gloves, 30 hats, a proven range of socks and an award winning range of gaiters. Through out this period we have continually sort to improve the performance of our designs and materials allowing the extremities® brand to become synonymous with the very best equipment.
extremities® products have been chosen by mountaineers and explores world-wide and used in the most extreme of environments. As our range has expanded to include products to suit less harsh conditions this endorsement is your assurance that extremities® products will provide the best protection and fit available.
Over 20 Years of Design Innovation
Unique Seam Taping Process:
In conjunction with our seam taping experts we developed a unique, advanced technology to seal seams that standard ‘hot air’ taping machine can not seal. This process is patented and enables extremities® to guarantee our Mountain Mitts are 100% waterproof.
Thumb Fit:
Typically mountaineering mitts suffered from a restrictive thumb position making the use of ice axes and karabiners difficult. After prolonged experimentation we developed a superb, free and easy thumb fit, designed to increase dexterity and be easily waterproofed with our unique taping process.
Best in Class Products:
The construction, material and fit of our randed gaiters combined to create simply the best products of their type. The culmination of this is the extremities® Terragaiter, which has been a proven classic on world wide expeditions from the poles to the summit of the world. The use of 5.10 rubber, 3-layer Gore-Tex® fabric and the expertise of our UK based factory combine to produce the highest levels of durability with excellent holding power.
Extremities Socks:
A disappointing Himalayan expedition with high-tech looking socks lead to the development of the Toester socks which lead on to the Mountain Toester. Using a combination of Merino wool, polypropylene and a tri-density construction we created a sock with superb warmth, wicking and drying plus excellent protection for the foot and shin. Its development has lead to a range of similar socks used from the Britvic Marathon of Britain to high altitude expeditions.
Elite Design for the Real World:
The Mountain Mitt has proven itself time and time again, but not everyone spends their free time above 8000 metres. The same unique design and innovation was adapted to the Handbag providing 100% waterproof and breathable protection for walkers, all year round. As a shell only the handbag can be used comfortably in warm conditions with the addition of insulating layers as the weather becomes colder. As such it is the epitome of the layering principle. Our philosophy of continual development produced the Tuffbag from the Handbag to provide greater durability, particularly important with the growing use of walking poles.
Superlite Products:
The most resent innovations have seen extremities® follow its sister company, Terra Nova, in to the booming world of lightweight backpacking. Using the very best fabrics from suppliers such as W.L.Gore® and Polartec®, extremities® have created a range of incredibly light products in both windproof and highly breathable fabrics. The ActiveX range contains some of the lightest Windstopper® products available and in combination with Polartec® Power Dry® extremities® have developed an exceptionally light and versatile glove in the Windy Lite Dry. At just 30g per pair, with a windproof back and a highly wicking palm, this glove is perfect for a wide range of active, aerobic sports.
Waterproof Liner Glove Concept:
For years the perceived wisdom in waterproof glove design has been to place the waterproof element of the glove in the shell. Unfortunately in situations such as walking-in the outer glove is not necessary. By placing the waterproof component in the inner layer we can design the outer layer with all the dexterity and protection required for climbing. Yet maintain excellent weather protection when not climbing. This also means that the outer glove or mitt can be used in milder weather and still provide the user with the same levels of protection and dexterity.
The Future
As material development advances so will our product development. We believe the future lies with ever lighter, but ever warmer and more breathable products. So whether these are leather or synthetic we will continually search for fabrics to help us achieve this.
