A strong, 3-man, semi-geodesic tent

The 'inner pitch first' design provides extra stability and great protection from all but the worst of the weather. The freestanding format also makes this tent ideal for camping where the ground is less firm, as it doesn't rely on guy lines and pegs to support its main structure

Review: Trisar in the Drakensburgs... 25/03/13

I took a Trisar 3 tent into the drakensburgs escarpment in South Africa to see how it would stand up to heat, sun, hail, rain and wind...

Don't confuse yourself into thinking that South Africa is a land of sunshine and blue skies. The Drakensburg Escarpment stands over 3000m high and regularly has piles of winter snow. During their autumn, I put the tent to the test on a crossing of the Berg.

The first thing I liked about the tent was its ease of pitching. Just three colour coded poles, a few clips and its up. The light reflecting guy ropes are soon pegged out and in less than five minutes you have a strong shelter.

The weather on the trip was poor and the tent stood severe hailstorms, pouring rain and driving wind. It did this easily. One night the outer and inner did touch (probably my heads fault), but still I stayed dry.

The entrance is built quite high and being 6'2" I was just able to sit up to dress and stretch. Something very useful in a rainstorm. The outer zips open on either side which allows easy ventilation and a wide entrance.

I would prefer the inner zip to open and close at the top, rather than the bottom to allow better high level ventilation when in damp, warm conditions. I have always preferred a draught through my tents to remove any condensation, something I did find in the morning light.

One very useful trail was that the tent always goes back into the bag easily, even when wet or packed badly. Just that little bit of extra room makes one hell of a difference.

Coming in at £190 the Trisar 3 is extremely reasonably priced, lightweight and tough. It would fit on everything from a normal British campsite, to alpine mountaineering with ease...
