The Ice Man Cometh – with Terra Nova and extremities

Posted on March 27th, 2014

In 2014, Terra Nova supported a team in the extreme Ice Man Polar Race, which takes place in the arctic. The team, was led by Derbyshire mountaineer Nigel Vardy.

The race involves backcountry skiing, cross country and nordic ski racing and is designed to test the skills and commitment of adventurers over two gruelling multi day routes.

Not one to choose the easy option, Nigel and his team faced sub zero temperatures as they covered up to 120 miles in a most beautiful and remote region of the high arctic; an area which borders the world’s largest frozen fjord and the world’s largest National Park.

Terra Nova supplied a Hyperspace tent and Extremities gloves and hats to protect Nigel and his team from the harsh conditions.

Nigel said,

‘The Ice Man Polar Race is one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced since suffering severe frostbite. The support given by Terra Nova is vital to safe survival in such extreme conditions, particularly when you have existing cold injures.  Having climbed in Greenland before, I know how harsh the weather can be and fully intend to compete the course as fast and as safely as I can’.
