Youngest Person to the South Pole

When Andrew Cooney, 23, an officer in the Territorial Army, became the youngest person ever to walk to the South Pole, he was supported by Terra Nova Equipment.

The British manufacturer of tents and outdoor clothing provided Andrew with a Super Quasar tent, a full specification expedition sleeping bag and a full set of Extremities clothing and accessories for the 53-day, 730-mile expedition from the Antarctic Coast to the South Pole. Andrew’s military training and Terra Nova equipment were put to the test with temperatures below –30ºC, but he was supported by high-performance gear built to withstand the most extreme weather conditions and freezing temperatures.

Andrew said: “Without the support and quality of equipment, the expedition would not have been able to happen. Pushing yourself to the limit and being supported by companies with such credibility in the outdoor industry made the whole experience a lot more comfortable.”

As well as setting a world record, the expedition raised money for the Oesophageal Patients Association. Andrew Cooney’s father suffers from the disease, and the young explorer raised more than £6,000 for the worthy charity.

Terra Nova Equipment was keen to support this tough expedition. Sales and marketing director Carolyn Budding said: “It seemed appropriate that our tents, which are regarded by many as the best tents in the world, should be part of this world record attempt. We were also pleased to be supporting such a worthwhile charity.”
