Severe frostbite and exposure have not deterred one Derbyshire man from returning to the Arctic for the first time in four years, with the support of Alfreton-based Terra Nova Equipment, the British manufacturer of tents and high-performance outdoor gear.
Nigel Vardy of Belper lost his toes and most of his fingers when he was stranded in a storm during his first expedition to conquer Mount McKinley in 1999, but this has not discouraged him from trying once again to attempt to climb one of the world’s most dangerous mountain ranges with the backing of Terra Nova.
Terra Nova Equipment has provided Nigel with a Super Quasar Endurance tent built to withstand the toughest and most extreme weather conditions, together with a selection of expedition-specific gloves, hats and socks from the company’s Extremities range. Last year Terra Nova presented Nigel with some specifically altered gloves. Nigel will be using them for his trip to the Arctic.
Nigel is extremely grateful for the support Terra Nova has given him and delighted to be teaming up with a local firm. Nigel said:
“Thanks to Terra Nova I can once again dare to explore the frozen glaciers of the Arctic, and feel safe in the knowledge that their equipment will protect me from the extreme cold temperatures on Baffin Island.”
Terra Nova Equipment has supported Nigel for more than four years and is delighted that he will be returning to the Arctic. Sales and marketing director Carolyn Budding said:
“Nigel has been a supporter of Terra Nova Equipment for a number of years so we are pleased to be able to support him on this monumental expedition. We admire Nigels bravery and ambition and wish him luck for this and all his future trips.”
