Cold Weather Dog Walking Checklist

Posted on March 20th, 2018

With cold and wet weather still persisting it’s best to go out prepared. We’ve put together this cold / winter dog walking checklist to keep you and your dog safe.

Protecting You

Here’s a list of a few things you may need when out walking if it’s cold and / or dark…

  • A fully charged phone, just in case you need to get hold of someone while you’re out and about.
  • A torch if you’re walking in the dark evenings.
  • A walking buddy again if you’re walking in the dark. A buddy can always make a walk more fun too!
  • Know your path! The last thing you want to do is get lost on a cold, dark, potentially wet evening.
  • A change of shoes or even clothes if you’re planning a muddy walk and have to hop in your car to get home.
  • Take a towel for your dog, even if it’s an old one.
  • Dogs need to keep hydrated so always take water and a water bowl with you to keep your dog’s thirst quenched after a long walk.
  • A flask with a hot drink for yourself is a good idea if it’s really cold, stop on the way if it’s a long walk or warm up when you’re back at the car.

Product Guide

Dropping temperatures mean colder walks and there’s nothing worse than having cold hands and ears when out walking so make sure you invest in a good pair of gloves and a hat. Extremities has a good range of thermal, windproof and waterproof gloves and hats which will suit a variety of weather conditions. Here’s some products that we’d recommend…

Falcon Glove

Windproof Gloves

Why not try the Falcon glove?  A lightweight glove with wind cheating XBlock windproof technology, this glove offers full protection from biting winds and is a good choice if you’re out at any time of year in windy weather.  There’s a touchscreen finger and thumb, so you can use your phone or other touchscreen device.   Perfect if you like to listen to music as you walk. They’re breathable too, with a tough Amara grip on the palm and fingers and like the guide glove are also water resistant, providing protection from light showers.

Waterproof Sticky Powerliner Glove

Waterproof Gloves

For when you need complete protection from the wet. The Waterproof Sticky Powerliner glove is a thermal glove with a waterproof, breathable membrane, they’ll ensure your hands stay warm, but not too warm.  Say goodbye to freezing, wet hands and enjoy every minute of your walk. If you need to take the gloves off they’re not too bulky to stash in a pocket either. Another good choice for year round use.

If you’re after a more traditional style of waterproof glove for walking your dog, the Extremities Winter Glove fits the bill perfectly.

The brushed lining not only adds extra warmth, but also makes the glove extra easy to slip on and off.  Made with X-Dry technology, it is waterproof and breathable.  Perfect for those long, winter rainy walks with your dog.

Trail Glove

Multi-Purpose Gloves

If the weather turns really cold, or you suffer with hands that get cold easily, the Trail Glove is windproof, waterproof and toasty warm.  The Primaloft insulation and cosy fleece lining will create a warm haven for your hands.  The XDry technology makes them windproof and waterproof whilst maintaining breath-ability.  The glove is the perfect choice for walking your dog if you live in a particularly harsh environment with heavy rain and bitter winds.

Not forgetting hygiene and cleaning, Extremities gloves come with washing instructions, just remember to use pure soap flakes or a specialist wash as ordinary detergent and fabric conditioners will affect the performance of waterproof and windproof gloves.
