Pitching A Tent – Push Poles, Don’t Pull

Push Poles Don't Pull

This quick tip is so simple, and yet so effective to help speed up your tent pitching and packing. It will also help to prolong the life of your pole sections! So read on.

When threading your poles in or out of the tent pole sleeves, it’s often tempting to start to pull them through after the first part has been inserted. This is especially when the tent is being dismantled and packed in a hurry. The problem is that pulling a pole through the pole sleeve can often cause the sections to become separated during the process. This not only makes it awkward and increases the time it can take to insert or remove the the pole, it can also damage the pole. Either by forcefully trying to jam pole sections back together at the wrong angle or with pieces of fabric caught between them. Or, by putting too much tension on the elastic / spring that keeps the pole sections together.

As such, it’s important to always push the pole, instead of pulling it. Both when pitching the tent, and dismantling it.
