You may have seen us talking about our TriPlex™ fabric, and how brilliant it is… but what is it and what actually makes it special?
The “Tri” of TriPlex™
TriPlex™ is a durable, ripstop shelter fabric, but it’s no normal ripstop, it’s triple ripstop. That’s right, we’ve designed the structure of TriPlex™ with three-directional polyester reinforcements to provide a stable matrix, dramatically increasing the durability and tensile strength of our shelter fabric.
Using this advanced structure provides added strength whilst still keeping the fabric weight minimal.

Breaking down the fabric composition
TriPlex™ is made up of a Nylon/Polyester composite, specifically a nylon base fabric with triple ripstop polyester reinforcements. This composition has multiple benefits:
Utilising the impressive strength-to-weight ratio of Nylon
Reduces stretch from being under load thanks to the Ripstop reinforcements
Helps ensure a longer lasting, reliable performance
By using this distinctive composition, we not only embrace the strengths of both Nylon & Polyester, but have them working together to create something even stronger.
Superior waterproofing
We’ve made sure that TriPlex™ isn’t just lightweight and strong. We design our tents in England, which means they need to be waterproof.
However, we didn’t want our high performance shelters to just be waterproof – we needed them to be more. That’s why we’ve engineered TriPlex™ with a silicone coating which provides a 3000mm Hydrostatic Head, putting it above the marketing average.
We could have gone more, but a 3000mm HH will see you through 4 seasons comfortably, and going higher means going heavier – and if you know anything about Terra Nova, you know that’s not how we roll.
Engineered for performance, without costing the earth
As well as being an extremely high performing, lightweight shelter fabric, TriPlex™ is also designed with sustainability in mind. We’ve ensured sustainability is considered at every design stage, from choosing fabrics through to production.
TriPlex™ is not only made using recycled fabric made up of post-consumer plastic bottles, but we’ve also solution dyed our fabric & used a PFC-Free coating.
What does solution dyed mean? This is a process where pigments are added at the Polymer stage before the yarn is formed, locking the colour directly into the fibre rather than adding the colour after like traditional dyeing methods. Solution dyeing also significantly reduced the amount of water used, the chemical output and overall energy consumption of production.
Solution dyeing doesn’t just help from a sustainable standpoint – Solution dyed fabric also provides a higher UV resistance.
