Have you ever fancied walking alone, across an entire country, carrying everything you’ll need with you each day? Well, that’s just what Olivier Moly is about to do, starting this Saturday (1st December 2012).
Olivier is no stranger to hiking or outdoor adventure. His parents were keen mountaineers, who introduced him at an early age to the great outdoors. He’s spent huge parts of his life walking and hiking across fantastic landscapes with his family, including a 47-day walk across the Pyrenees covering 800 kilometres with his sister, which he enjoyed so much, he did it again the year after with his father!
Now, for his greatest challenge, Olivier is going to hike across New Zealand. From top to bottom, he’ll walk across the Te Araroa path, which only opened a year ago. The trail path stretches from Cape Reinga in the north of New Zealand to Bluff in the south. Some 3,000 kilometres in total (over 1,800 miles).
Olivier estimates the journey will take him about 5 months, and he plans to find shelter where he can each night. One essential item on his kit list was of course, his emergency shelter. There are going to be times when he won’t necessarily be able to locate somewhere to bed down for the night, so he’ll need to pitch up and make camp wherever he is. If you’re travelling these distances alone and carrying all your gear, then every gram in your rucksack counts! That’s why Olivier came to world leaders in lightweight outdoor gear – Terra Nova Equipment. He chose the lightest tent in the world, the Laser Ultra 1 tent, to take with him on this exciting trip. The tent weighs just 0.495Kg /1lb 1oz (0.56Kg /1lb 4oz packed weight) and will only take up a tiny amount of space in his rucksack (35cm x 8cm). The Laser Ultra 1 tent will give him the peace of mind that he will always have a waterproof shelter to get his head down each night, whatever happens, taking only a few minutes to pitch and pack away in the morning.
