The simple light structure of a tarp is great for buliding different types of shelter systems in the backcountry.

The Competition Tarp 2 features reinforced eyelets, webbing tapes for multiple set up options and is a lighter option to the Adventure Tarp 2. It uses our high quality Watershed Si2 silicone nylon fabric which is also used in our Laser Competition 1 and 2 tents. This tarp works great with our Discovery Lite bivi to offer a lightweight, reliable shelter system.

This item is very flexible and can be folded into various different sizes and ways making it adaptable to fit different sized bags and paniers.

Also available in a smaller size as the Competition Tarp 1.

Review: 1200 metres NZ storm tested, light and big 13/01/20

I have tested this tarp a number of times in sub-alpine New Zealand weather, which seems to be more demanding than European and US conditions. Think 100km winds (though we found a bit of shelter) and 100mm per hour rain. Other times, windy -2c. Being light I have it with me always, even on day walks. Great to get out of the rain for lunch for example. I like the quick drying properties too, can shake off most of the water. I do wonder if any sylnon tarp would be as good as it is pretty simple , but f I lost it, I would buy another as it has been through the ringer. The loop in the middle of apex is great as you can stretch another cord between trees to make the tarp peak up in the middle, particularly if you have one end of the tarp low to block weather. Think slope down to one edge with the middle stretched up to a peak. It would be great (5 star) if it had a couple more more loops along the edge or was in the a hammock tarp shape as the additional triangle flaps flaps let you shut out weather at the end. 4 star is maybe a bit tough as the lopps and hammock shap would add weight, and lightweight is great, so maybe a 5 star.

I have been an outdoors enthusiast for several decades now enjoying so many activities from Mountaineering, Hill Walking, Mountain Biking, Bushcraft, Camping, Motorcycle Touring to Hiking Adventures further afield. I have come to realise regardless of the environment and elements having at hand a good shelter is essential, whether using the diversity of a tarp on its own or simply as an addition to any tent to improve living space especially for a group or during cooking. I have owned various Tarps but, by far the best in both the quality of the materials used and design The Terra Nova Competition Tarp 2 is second to none. It is the perfect size, weighs a mere actual 337g / 32oz, packs down to 12x22cm without any compression and as has a formidable HH rating of 5000mm. I cannot recommend this Tarp enough and how essential it is to add to any outdoor gear.
